So pleased to have found your Substack. My lovely January thing is finally turning the dumping room into a proper office/gym/making messes space. Much sorting and tip tripping to be done though!
Beeswax candles and hyacinths in glass containers. Neals Yard Woman’s balance massage oil and an indulgent bath soak/shower gel. New books for cosy evenings. New journals to pour my soul into and all the red wine.
We've kept some white lights and candles on the mantle piece to bring light into the evening darkness. I absolutely love it! The good news jar is a great idea, will ask the family whether they want to do that.
I dutifully took all the decs down before 12th night and then noticed I’d left the lights up over the mantelpiece - they are still there but I hadn’t switched them on because of a vague feeling of superstitiousness. Now I’m going to put them on and leave them on until possibly the end of February to cheer me up. By the way I thoroughly agree with no diets or dry January until March - may I recommend Tony’s salted pretzel flavour dark milk chocolate which I discovered this weekend.
I’ve been known to leave the tree up until February. They’re pretty! And fairy lights, just like sad-eyed puppies, are for life, not just for Christmas. Love the tip on bad things barely featuring in your autobiography
Fires in the fireplace, fresh flowers, especially tulips, around the house, big stacks of books and magazines, my Lola blanket, the couch, a new 2025 calendar with a big red felt pen to cross off the days and assorted “naughty morsels” sweet, salty, or sour, (high caloric) within arms reach, are my coping mechanism for winter.
Screw the diet plans! I’ll deal with that at a much later date!
Right now, it’s survival, and that means layers, whatever form they come in!
I had to google Lola blanket and now I want one! Naughty morsels sound heaven. I have started to make big bowls of popcorn, which started out as a way of weaning myself off crisps and has now become a replacement addiction.
I think the Good News Jar is an excellent idea. We have a few of the christmas lights that stay all year, but we definitely clear most of it, and particularly the tree, on Twelth Night, gotta keep some traditions going!!
I did the same! Took off decorations and left the lights — I’ve decided that until the sun sets AFTER 5pm, the lights stay up! ✨
I like the 5pm idea!
Thanks, Jessica!

Tip trips are the best tho…

Ooh, yes - lots of very nice things there. I've just remembered a stash of beeswax candles - going to dig them out.

Or...just do it! I probably write most of the notes, to be fair. Though we do now say through the year, 'this is one for the jar.'
A good news jar... I think I will take you up on that, great idea! The whole year could with such reminders.
Yes! Glad you liked it.

Rushing to buy that Tony’s! And so pleased about the lights on the mantelpiece x

Fairy lights and sad-eyed puppies … ha haa… love it. Thank you Justin x
Wonderful ❤️
Thank you! Love your Substack name, too.
Thank you! xx
This is so lovely
Thank you!

Lola is the BEST!!
I have a love/hate relationship with popcorn. Love eating it, hate picking my teeth!
No deprivation for me either, regarding drinking. I’m definitely cooling it after Christmas, but not giving it up.
